In our continuing quest to stress how we must diversify our economy, In Business Las Vegas published a question and answer article with Mike Skaggs on just this topic:

The diversification of Nevada’s economy always seems to come up when times are bad, as in, “The reason things are so bad in our state is that we’re too dependent on the gaming industry.”

Mike Skaggs, executive director of the Nevada Economic Development Commission, knows that all too well, having devoted most of his career to working to diversify one economy or another. He heads the state’s economic development effort, focusing on a diversified economic base.

Skaggs talked with In Business Las Vegas about the challenges of economic diversification, the state’s biggest rivals for recruiting businesses and the roadblocks to getting companies to consider Nevada for their operations.

By Richard N. Velotta (contact), In Business reporter

He sums up what we’ve been stressing over and over in this newsletter:
We have to stay the course. In the past, we’ve gone through one of these and the hospitality industry came back with, “OK, never mind, we don’t need to do this anymore.” Well, we do. We have to make this a permanent, long-term commitment to get this thing diverse so we never go through this again.

    Un-stereotyping of jobs

Posted In: Diversity, Housekeeping by doug

Somewhere along the way we created a bad habit of stereotyping jobs.  Yes this goes a long way back, but it still exists.  A recent article in the Las Vegas Review Journal by Jane Ann Morrison titled “Despite the difficulties, these women refuse to trash their jobs“ raised the issue again.   Jane’s article goes on to explain that Republic Services started allowing women to apply for jobs as trash haulers in 1994.  Today, only 2% of Republic Service drivers/pitchers (16 of 800)  are women.  Is that because we stereotype these workers as  ‘trash men.’  And what do we think of when we discuss ’cabana boys’ or ‘cocktail waitresses.’

Can we change this by the way we recruit for these  jobs?  I would say…yes we can.

Although we are not supposed to ‘profile’ the demographic makeup of a a particular profession or classification, we surely do.  I have found myself guilty of this many times asking a client “who makes the perfect applicant” for a certain position.  And then we develop a recruiting plan on how to effectively reach that audience based upon the current demographic makeup of that profession.

This stereotyping goes beyond just gender.  Many positions are stereo-typed by ethnic origin.  Here are some examples:

    • When you think of a landscaper, what comes to mind?  Probably a young Mexican male.
    • A nail technician?  Asian female.
    • Taxi driver?  Mid-Eastern male.
    • Guest Room Attendant?  Mexican female.

Sad, but true.  So how do we correct this?  And more  importantly, can it be corrected?   Next week I will do a post on how we plan to diversify the Guest Room Attendant (GRA) position in the casino in order to solve a critical workforce shortage.  It can be done.  It just never has been done.  This will be the basis of our newest case study and recruitment solution.

MGM-MirageI’m thinking about creating a category dedicated to MGM-Mirage and the awards they win.  They will soon need a building dedicated to all of their trophies and awards.  It is great to see Las Vegas’ very own at the top of many of the lists dedicated to “Best Places to Work”.

Most recently, MGM-Mirage was named one of the 100 best places to work in information technology by Computerworld Magazine and of the 40 best companies for diversity by Black Enterprise Magazine

Keep up the great work.  You really help all of us here in Las Vegas through your leadership.
